A young woman is hugging her toddler in a pumpkin field. She is Madavia Johnson of Clayton N.C. and her story of how her Medicaid coverage ended before she could get help for her postpartum anxiety makes up the first few paragraphs of the story.

Madavia Johnson, of Clayton, N.C., experienced severe postpartum anxiety last year after giving birth to her son, Donald. She was eligible for Medicaid while pregnant but lost her eligibility 60 days after Donald was born. As a result, Donald was 8 months old before Johnson was able to see a doctor.
