Sen. Sydney Batch (D-Raleigh) recounts how when she had children and when she had cancer she did not receive paid sick leave. “After my mastectomy and radiation appointments, I relied on my mother, my sisters and friends to negotiate time away from work to help me navigate the long commute to my appointments,” Batch said. “That was hard for me and my family.” Credit: Rose Hoban
